"St Augustine defines virtue as ordo amoris, the ordinate condition of the affections in which every object is accorded that kind of degree of love which is appropriate to it.11 Aristotle says that the aim of education is to make the pupil like and dislike what he ought.12 When the age for reflective thought comes, the pupil who has been thus trained in 'ordinate affections' or 'just sentiments' will easily find the first principles in Ethics; but to the corrupt man they will never be visible at all and he can make no progress in that science.13 Plato before him had said the same. The little human animal will not at first have the right responses. It must be trained to feel pleasure, liking, disgust, and hatred at those things which really are pleasant, likeable, disgusting and hateful."

Radio, Dresses and No Dorothy Sayers

Once again my good intentions are thwarted by life. I had hoped to finish up The Mind of the Maker today but it will have to wait for another day. The next to the last chapter is superb and I have had trouble finding a large chunk of time to do it justice. In the end I may end up just posting quotations from the chapter.

Today is a bit off schedule because at the last minute I was asked to do a radio interview. I will be heading out right before I take Andrew to practice to a local talk radio show to discuss Charlotte Mason and educating the freeborn. I would be nervous if I wasn't so confused. The target audience is men 45-50. They play rock-a-billy when not doing talk radio. If you would say a prayer from me between 1:00 and 2:00 I would appreciate it. I am praying the 'right' person will hear it and be encouraged.

I am also trying to carve out time to brainstorm for my Circe talk next summer which is Mothers and Sons. I am excited about the topic but I don't want it to end up a comedy routine of the most absurd things that have happened in our home over the years.

I realize I could not care less about what happens on Downton Abbey.  All I really want to do is look at the scenery and the clothes. Oh, my, the clothes. I wish I could wear those cricket dresses to a baseball game. Not really because I am not built like Lady Mary but oh, my goodness the whole thing was so lovely.

  1. Great topic! (You know, a little comedy never hurt anyone. Be yourself and if we laugh along at what happens...it's because you are making us feel normal and ok. Mothers of sons NEED to know how to laugh!
Hugs...praying at 1 for your show.

  2. LOL! My feelings exactly, and I sent email to my adult daughter along the same lines. However, all my boys have said they refuse to be dandied up to play cricket in the front yard so that I can wear a beautiful dress and hat and stand under a parasol,

I had a moment of passing fear that we may be nearing the end of Downton Abby's glory days of fashion. The new character with the roaring 20's dress at the dance club could be the death of Downton Abby if they continue with that story line.

  3. I think I've enjoyed Downton more for the setting and period than the story, and some (many?) of the characters are downright annoying. Unfortunately the very traumatic (especially for this pregnant woman) episode the other week has turned me off watching the rest of Season 3. I didn't like the whole "new footman" subplot, either.

I am looking forward to hearing your talk, though I will have to wait for the recordings. We found out we are expecting boy number four in June. I grew up in a family of four girls, and although I always wanted to have boys, the thought of four is rather overwhelming at the moment, especially if this one is as intense and lively as his older brothers!

    Hope your broadcast goes well!

    1. Go and visit the Marathon Mom....she has 8 boys....the thought overwhelms me, but I'm sure she could encourage you. God bless you as you wait for this new little one....boys are so fun, but they are lively, aren't they?

  4. The folks at Downton sure know how to do a sporting event, don't they? Good luck on the broadcast. I think God plans these things for a reason even if we never know what it is.

  5. I agree about Downton Abbey. I watch it mostly to see what Lady Mary is wearing this week. The hat she wore to the cricket match was so beautiful. I loved it.

I will pray for your Circe talk. I'm still hoping that I can somehow make it this year now that it has moved. I look forward to hearing your talk on Mothers and Sons. I am always encouraged when you talk about your boys and your relationship with them.

    Joy
