"St Augustine defines virtue as ordo amoris, the ordinate condition of the affections in which every object is accorded that kind of degree of love which is appropriate to it.11 Aristotle says that the aim of education is to make the pupil like and dislike what he ought.12 When the age for reflective thought comes, the pupil who has been thus trained in 'ordinate affections' or 'just sentiments' will easily find the first principles in Ethics; but to the corrupt man they will never be visible at all and he can make no progress in that science.13 Plato before him had said the same. The little human animal will not at first have the right responses. It must be trained to feel pleasure, liking, disgust, and hatred at those things which really are pleasant, likeable, disgusting and hateful."

Football is Over. Let the Real Games Begin or I Try to Outsmart the Scale

A new week begins and this one is a little busier than I like. I have a dermatology (melanoma-17 years ago) appointment today and a dentist appointment tomorrow.

Today is also my weigh-in at Weight Watchers. I am never sure how that is going to go and Emily and I think it would be funny to record our conversations on the way there. They are usually full of philosophy and predictions and analytical ramblings.  I am nervous this week because I have gained weight on the weeks I have exercised the most and this week I ran about 9 miles something I have never done before in my life.  But it all comes out in the wash.  But another thing is that the running has made me much hungrier and it is hard to decide whether to use my activity points or weekly points. Yes, it is all a big psychological game to outwit my body, my enemy.

Tomorrow is THE big day. The first baseball game of the year. Benjamin has a double header at Chatt. State and just as soon as I get my crown put on (dentist, remember?) I am heading over there to watch him play. It will be his first official college game....if he gets off the bench. He Will!!

I hate to cancel Morning Time but I am doing it today because everyone's day is cut short by my trip to the dermatologist. Hopefully we will squeeze it in tomorrow. I am excited because we just began a new book: The Book Thief.

Alex wrote a beautiful narration this morning and I was going to share it but he was embarrassed about that and since children are born persons I decided not to.

Now off to drink another 32 oz. of water before my weigh-on, all part of the war to outsmart anything that might make we weigh more. It is tricky because if I don't get the timing right I might be adding 32 oz. to my weight.  :)

  1. Haven't visited in a while. I got a new computer before the holidays and no longer use a google dashboard, which is how I used to be reminded whenever you updated your blog. So now I'm behind, and it will take me a while to catch up.

I'm excited to see that you are posting about your diet and exercise. I can use all the continued encouragement that I can get.

And as usual....I sooooo appreciate your prolific reading and book recommendations. I haven't gotten to the stage of life where I have that much time to read, but I like to have good ideas for when I do. And now that we have no computer or TV time after 8:00 p.m. (except on Downton Abby night), I should have more time to read.

  4. Cindy,
I hope all went well at your dermatology visit and your weigh-in. I read The Book Thief last year after my oldest son recommended it. The author has an amazing way with words.
