"St Augustine defines virtue as ordo amoris, the ordinate condition of the affections in which every object is accorded that kind of degree of love which is appropriate to it.11 Aristotle says that the aim of education is to make the pupil like and dislike what he ought.12 When the age for reflective thought comes, the pupil who has been thus trained in 'ordinate affections' or 'just sentiments' will easily find the first principles in Ethics; but to the corrupt man they will never be visible at all and he can make no progress in that science.13 Plato before him had said the same. The little human animal will not at first have the right responses. It must be trained to feel pleasure, liking, disgust, and hatred at those things which really are pleasant, likeable, disgusting and hateful."

Mind of the Maker Update

If you know me, you know that while I may take a long, long time to complete something, I generally just plod away rather than quit. I have not quit my re-reading of  The Mind of the Maker and I hope a few of you are still with me. I suspect that at least one or two may even be on my original schedule. I am sorry that I have been delinquent. I am now hiking up my trousers and starting where I left off.  I will put up a new Linky and new post this weekend for Tuesday. Feel free to jump in anytime.

January 8: Chapter 7 Maker of all Things-Maker of Ill Things
January 15: Chapter 8 Pentecost
January 22: Chapter 9 The Love of the Creature
January 29: Chapter 10 Scalene Trinities
February 5: Chapter 11 Problem Picture
February 12: Postscript: The Worth of the Work

  1. I am here!

But my computer? Not so much. :(

I hope to rejoin the party once we get it back from the shop... :)

Thanks for hosting this club, Cindy. I would never have read the book, I don't think, and I feel like she is speaking to all of my writing sins in the best possible way!

Plus I love her approach to apologetics. :)

  2. I'm still here, plodding along and enjoying the conversations quietly.

Also, the CiRCE Conference is coming to me, in Baltimore, which means that I will get to be there - truly a dream come true! I am greatly looking forward to hearing you speak.

And Brandy, if you are reading this - I wish I could meet you as well. Are you coming? My dear friend and neighbor, Ashley LaPointe, is the sister of a friend of yours, Rahime. Small, small world, no? Especially the CiRCE world....

  3. Are you serious? I remember Ashley from Biola years ago! Yes, it IS a small world. You made me smile today.

I wish I was going to CiRCE. We just cannot swing it financially. I keep hoping that someday there will be one on the West coast...

Cindy, I haven't forgotten, nor have I quit. I got my computer back and got distracted by my gun control obsession. It is a sickness, really. I got out my Sayers books but accidentally read Lord Peter instead. I apparently have no self control right now...
